Story of Anganwadi - UX project

February 2022 by Pooja Katti

What is an anganwadi?
Anganwadi Centre is one of the important institutions to ensure nutrition and preschool education of the children of age group 3-6 years. There is as many as 13.79 lakh anganwadis operational across the country. Of those anganwadis that can be monitored online, 1.09 lakh centres are in urban areas and the remaining 8.22 lakh were in rural areas of the country, according to the RTI.

Who are present in an anganwadi?
1. Anganwadi teacher
2. Anganwadi helper
3. Children
4. Pregnant ladies (occasionally)
5. NGO Volunteer (ocasionally)

I visited the preschool for almost a week to understand how it functions, I went as a helper to the faculty. I spent time with the kids, taught children simple art and craft and took care of the faculty's documentation work.
Spending time onsite gave me a lot of insights into how things work in that school, I could observe the pain points of the users. While I was on site, I also conducted informal interviews, jotted down my observations and wrote a journal every day about things happening in the space.

Task performed by people involved in anganwadi.

Keywords from primary research

Empathy map

An empathy map helped me in visualizing user attitudes and behaviour. It gave me a deep understanding of end users.

User persona

Hierarchy of needs

In detail research and talking to users gave me insights on what is the need of the users. Which needs to be prioritised and required immediate attention. Considering the scope of this project, Not all the needs could be addressed but, the high-priority problem could be solved.

To develop a system that helps Anganwadi teachers to maintain records of students and pregnant ladies hassle-free. Currently, he/she maintains 6 different books on a daily basis. It becomes difficult to store the record books and send them for auditing purposes. It's hectic to locate particular data of a student / Woman at a given point in time. Few of the records are misplaced or lost during storage/auditing purposes as they are sent to a different place.

Understanding problem statement and proposing solution

Usually, Anganwadi centres have a maximum of 30 kids enrolled. It becomes difficult to record the details of all the kids manually. On average, 5 -6 pregnant ladies approach these centres for their health and schemes. The teacher notes down their details and suggests them the appropriate schemes. She also organises events that benefit them. Thus, on a day-to-day basis, the majority of the time goes away in writing and maintaining books.

What does the record book contain?
- Child enrollment process and parent's details
- Child’s attendance
- Child's academic progress and lesson plans
- Child’s health and nutrition
- Pregnant lady enrollment
- Pregnant lady's health
- Nutrition and check-ups
- Schemes that women enrolled in

To create a system/platform which can ease the process of recording documents and quick access to data at any point in time. To create a mobile application which is used by the anganwadi teachers on the day to day basis. This will help them to quickly analyse information on kid's progress and nutrition on regular basis. Pregnant lady data and regular check-ups can also be monitored and recorded.
